Verdict

Stores that want set-and-forget compression with SEO file names and ALT text get it for $4.99 a month on Micro1. The catch is that plans meter megabytes, not images, so heavy photos push you up a tier, and there is no data export, Shopify Flow support or named security certification1,2,7.

Install it if

  • Small and mid-size stores that want automatic compression for $5 to $10 a month
  • Merchants who want image file names and ALT text built from product data
  • Stores that want to keep compressed images after leaving the app

Skip it if

  • Stores that want AI-written ALT text
  • Merchants who need data export, an API or Shopify Flow
  • Stores with very large photo files and a strict budget

Good

  • Paid plans start at $4.99 a month1.
  • Rated 4.8, with the Built for Shopify badge1.
  • Compressed and renamed images stay in your store after you uninstall4.
  • Original images are kept 30 days for single or bulk restore6.

Not so good

  • Quotas count megabytes, so large photos use up a plan faster2.
  • No time-limited trial and no refunds; the Free plan is a one-time 25 MB2.
  • Fewer than 500 reviews1.
  • No data export, Shopify Flow support or named security certification1,7.

How we worked out the bill

Store sizePer monthArithmetic
Small, 300 orders$4.99Micro, $4.99 a month for 500 MB, covers 40 new images unless they average over 12.5 MB each1. The Free plan is a one-time 25 MB, so it does not cover a monthly flow2.
Growing, 2,000 orders$4.99Micro's 500 MB covers 200 new images if they average 2.5 MB or less: $4.99 a month1.
Large, 10,000 orders$9.99800 images at up to 2.5 MB each need up to 2 GB, Pro's monthly quota, at $9.991. Micro would cover them only if they average 625 KB or less.

What it does

Crush, also sold as Crush.pics, compresses the images in your Shopify store and renames files and ALT text so search engines understand them1. You set compression and naming rules once and it works in the background as images arrive1,3.

The app launched in June 2016, is built by Space Squirrel Ltd. in the UK and carries the Built for Shopify badge1.

  • Automatic compression of product, collection, blog, page and Shopify Files images1,5.
  • SEO file names and ALT text built from product fields such as vendor, type and title3.
  • Balanced, Conservative or Custom compression presets3.
  • 30-day backup with single or bulk restore6.
  • Theme images and externally hosted images are not compressed5.

What merchants say

The app is rated 4.8 from 454 reviews, with 90% at five stars1. Merchants describe it as set-and-forget compression that lifts PageSpeed scores without visible quality loss1. Recent reviews from April 2026 criticise a redesigned interface and slower automation8.

Complaints worth knowing

  • April 2026 reviews criticise a redesigned interface and automation that is slow to start; one reviewer later raised the rating after the developer promised fixes8.
  • A seven-year user says the app still lacks AI-written ALT text8.

What the developer claims

Numbers the developer publishes about itself. We have not verified them.

  • Crush says a typical store drops over half its image weight with no visible change3.

Your data

Crush stores images and its database on Amazon S3 and delivers compressed images through Amazon CloudFront7. The privacy policy says European data may be transferred to Canada and the United States, and it names no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification7. Originals are kept for 30 days for restores6. There is no documented export, but compressed and renamed images stay in your store if you remove the app4.

App languages: English. Works with: Shopify Admin, image optimizer, speed. On the App Store since: June 6, 2016.
